When Lord Macaulay introduced English in India he did not know that village children did not know that it is A for apple pie. They were not familiar with the apple fruit, still chewing on juicy local mangoes and jackfruits - much less a pie. This started a tug of war in the innocent idli brains of millions of children learning a different language at school and speaking their native language at home.
This sweet little essay is Narayan's observation that the language of the United Kingdom is so many kilometers away and yet the official language of a country with more than 13 languages.
