Autumn of the Year - Joyce Carol Oates - 174 / 365 of reading one short story every day.

In the Autumn of the Year, an ageing and award winning writer comes to a college to receive an award. She meets the son of the married man with whom she once had an affair.
The son is not only aware of the affair but plans to avenge his mother’s pain and the destruction to the family the affair caused. He lets her know of the permanent disaster she brought to his own life and that of his mother.

A story of pent up anger and deep rooted angst, it shows through the disillusioned son, the way women are seen as playtoys in the hands of powerful and insincere men and how the society will sooner judge a woman than a man.

image from istockphto - A Biblical painting of 1920s showing a women caught in adultery shunned and shamed by the society. Jesus (with the halo) is the one who doesn't judge her and forgives her sins, telling her to then return to a life of repentance and not to be afraid of being judged anymore.
