The Enemy - Pearl S Buck - 179 / 365 of reading one short story every day.

The Enemy - Far and Near Stories - Pearl S Buck

The story is a portrayal of the dilemma between a man’s heart and mind and how he is constantly in a fight within himself to make the right decision. It also shows how people can help each other even though there may be differences.

Dr. Sadao, a Japanese army doctor, is in a situation of odds where he has to help an American prisoner of war. This was at a time when Japan and America were at war. But the story is not about war or the effects of it on soldiers. It is about humanity and how borders do not matter when it is about lines crossing the heart and duties directed by the mind.

This vintage World War II cartoon poster features a factory worker squeezing a Japanese soldier in a vice.
