The Envelope - Dorothy West - 155 / 365 of reading one short story every day.

The Envelope

When a strange looking envelope lands in George Henty’s house, he is puzzled. It takes him a moment to realize that it is from his old flame of twenty years ago, Adreinne Holister. Suddenly George is transported back to his college days and his youth. The time when he was slim and healthy, not heavy and stout at forty four now. And his present wife Lottie is waiting for him, with a dinner made with love and warmth.

But this homely man who loved his home and its sanctuary, is now ashamed of his plain life and increasing bulge. He goes on to mentally compare his wife’s obesity to the once known version of another woman who was young and more beautiful.

The story goes on to show how feeble and fragile our egos can be when it comes to body image and how it can affect relationships.
