German playwright and writer , an important naturalist author was influenced mainly by the Giant Mountains, Italy and the Baltic Sea.
The Brandenburg town, in Germany is of central influence for Hauptmann's development as a writer. It was here that he became interested in the lives of ordinary people and based his books on his observances. In 1889, he became famous for the controversial drama Before Sunrise. Though he got criticism, later on he was regarded by other playwrights and authors as an important voice. According to scholars - ‘ in his great dramas he overcame the determinism of milieu, heredity and circumstances proclaimed by naturalism through genuine, realistic portrayals of people.’
His works have the elements of sagas, myths and fairy tales, and of heroic qualities.
Bahnwärter Thiel is a novelistic study by Gerhart Hauptmann . The story was published in 1888. It is one of the most important works of naturalism . With his main character Thiel, Hauptmann works out “the helplessness in the face of corporate society and the threat posed by industrialization ”.
The story goes back to an accident on the railway line from Erkner to Fürstenwalde and is based on the poet's experiences during his life on the outskirts of Berlin.
