Nadine Gordimer - 323 / 365 of reading one short story every day.

Political activism was at the core of author Nadine Gordimer. And this reflected in her writing.

She grew up reading the great realists of 19th- and early 20th-century fiction, and the writings of Tolstoy, Turgenev and Dostoevsky impacted her thinking as well.

Her life in Johannesburg, the plight of black workers, the mining class background - all can be seen in her novels and short stories.

Soft Voice of the Serpent, a short story by Nadine Gordimer tells of the most bizarre relationship which a man, who has lost his leg, has with a wounded locust. When the man who is still trying to accept his own injury, notices that the locust has also been handicapped by the loss of a limb, he feels an instant connection towards the locust.
