I'm thinking 10 years ago, I used to hop from one shop to another in Kottayam with my cousin. We used to window shop with so much patience that some shop owners eventually recognized us. They used to wave at us as if we were local superstars.
10 years forward and here I am sitting in my dining room with a cup of tea. Because of a back pain which is killing me, I cannot go upto the balcony. Does it not sound like what a 50 year old would say?
Mellowing down, soft spoken, mature, decent are all synonyms of growing up. To our parents it happened when they were quite young. For lack of social media, cable, torn jeans, access to international music and ofcourse because of poverty they had to work hard and build savings. Even if you were better off, they were mature and mellowed the moment they stepped into hard ground of adolescence.
And here we are with babies/about to get married/working our ass off to pay back a loan/supporting a family etc. Have we really grown up though?
Does growing up mean filling your CV by writing ' my hobbies are reading Paulo Coelho's books' (instead of the Archies you have kept hidden from your niece which if she founds will brand you as kiddish) or does growing up mean teaching your niece not to have stereotypes?
Can you just throw away your Backstreet Boys,MLTR and make space for Cooking with Tarla Dalal CDs,your children's schoolbooks etc?
Will you make an impulse purchase of paints for your glass painting passion?...Oh wait, grown ups don't have passions and impulses right?
I rather feel growing up means letting go off strings that bring us down and at the same time be grounded and humble. Its understanding ourselves better and being confident to stand up for our beliefs.
