Homecoming - Banaphool

from the short story collection - The Greatest Bengali Stories Ever Told - Arunava Sinha

   Author Banaphool

In ‘The Homecoming’, an insurance agent travelling home by train for Durga Puja encounters a most unexpected co-passengers.
There is a handsome man and two beautiful ladies along with an equally elegant older woman. The agent has tried his luck with selling insurance but he lost out on a recent account. He dwells tiredly on that while he journeys. When he sets his eyes on the family, he tries his salesman tricks on the family too while not losing out on mild flirting with the ladies.

But in the course of the conversation, he understands that they are not an ordinary family. They are sharp, observant and learned people who have seen enough of the world - including smart salespeople and crooked ways of humans.

He likens the man to be an image of Lord Ganesha and the rest as three other goddesses. He understands that it is time for him as well them to arrive home.
