Transformation - A Tamil short story - by Mauni
From the collection of short stories - The Tamil Story

S. Mani, a Tamil short story writer was known as Mauni. With 24 short stories to his credit, he had many published between 1936 to 1971.

‘Transformation‘ is a story about a man who has just lost his wife.
At the moment the house wears a mournful atmosphere. It is dark and quiet. No crickets chirping their lullaby, the moon too has lost its glow and the path in front of the hut has a few neighbors - standing in solidarity and support. The husband thinks back to their married life and the humdrum of a shared home - bright sunlight gleaming through pale curtains, noisy neighborhood, vendors traveling with knick-knacks and a temple bell sounding nearby. But now there is darkness - in his heart as well as outside.

The story speaks of the man’s gradual acceptance of his wife’s death and grief.
