Intellect - Ralph Waldo Emerson – Essay

Intellect is the cure for each and every thing that can be repaired or solved in the world, according to Emerson. It is only with the help of intellect that a person is in a position to rationalize as to what is right or wrong. In the absence of intellect, there would have been no difference between man and animal. He says that one must be aware of the experience the rational mind comes across when instinct and consciousness gathers in us. Together all these elements can be guided by intellect to take us to a sound decision. Intellect thus is the cure for each and every thing according to Emerson. The abstract truth is the result of the combination of intellect and intellection. It is only with the help of intellect that a person is in a position to rationalize as to what is right and what is wrong. If intellect would have been absent in an individual’s mind, there would have been no difference between that individual and any other animal.

In Emerson’s words, “a certain wandering light appears and is the distinction, the principle we wanted.” Emerson states that while air and water are responsible for dissolving a few things, intellect dissolves gravity, laws, methods, fire and also the tiniest unnamed relations of nature.
