Raven’s Wing - Joyce Carol Oates - 177 / 365 of reading one short story every day

Raven’s Wing

Raven’s Wing was included in The Best American Short Stories, 1985. Compared to most of Oates’ themes of violence and suffering, this is mildly narrated. A very ordinary marriage of two individuals who can feel the weight of their companionship. Billy, the husband, is indifferent and absent - mentally more than physically. Linda is pregnant and partly due to her hormones, and partly due to the disinterest in the marriage, spites and taunts Billy.

It takes a crippled horse to bring to light the gaps of their relationship and how they overcome these perceptions of a happily-ever-after in a mature way.
