The Triumph of Life
The Triumph of Life is an unfinished poem of Shelley, when he died on July 8, 1822, when his boat Don Juan capsized. The poem was first published in the collection Posthumous Poems (1824)
The theme of the poem is an exploration of the nature of being and reality. Shelley constantly explores the nature of one’s presence and and of the subconscious mind. Additionally, there are themes of morality love, fame, divinity etc. He tries to understand which of these themes are immortal and which ones will perish.
Swift as a spirit hastening to his task
Of glory & of good, the Sun sprang forth
Rejoicing in his splendour, & the mask
Of darkness fell from the awakened Earth.
The above is the first stanza of the poem.
"Then, what is Life?" I said . . . the cripple cast
His eye upon the car which now had rolled
Onward, as if that look must be the last,
And answered .... "Happy those for whom the fold
