Suddenly, shockingly, absolutely and completely - I miss India!! Been here in the Gulf for 6 months now but for the last 1 week, I miss my country.
I ain't a very homesick person. Been in hostels for 8 years, I have long since given up the ache of constant travel to and fro home and have adjusted to a life where I get to see family once in 4 months. Not because neither want to see each other, but because every weekend travel of 12 hours isn't something which my previous unfair paying IT job could provide for.
But of late ,I miss the colours of my country. The noise, the horns, the annoying traffic, the irregularities of the buildings and comforting sight of the vendors create a picture of home which I miss. So many evenings,in India, have I walked past cozy looking houses and ignored the amazing gardens.... and in this arid land I look twice at a forlorn tree.
And did I tell you there's no concept of roadside vendors here ? ugh! If you are hungry please drive-in to a nearby McDonalds and you can have an amazing variety of non-veg!
I think one doesn't have to depend on 15th Aug to feel patriotic. It takes a aromatic dish or a colorful dupatta in an expat land to know how it feels. Somedays the comfort is in seeing fellow countrymen roaming around and meeting them at common places. The want of one's land never truly goes away. No matter how much we crib in our own place, when we are away home is everything. Like Shah Rukh says ' I don't wanna go to Hollywood coz I'm king in Bollywood!' ;)
And right now all I can think of is what I have taken for granted while in India - the constant chatter of neighbors who just wanna talk about your new car, the more than enough greenery, the annoying vendors who would swarm every nook and corner, the array of vegetarian Sukh sagars and footpath flea markets selling everything from toothbrush to candleholder!
Well before I cross over to complete nagging and painting the other side of grass green, I should say it's not complaining. It's more a result of acute boredom plus casual observations of the immaculately neat, rule driven and disciplined life of Gulf. It's perfect but sometimes perfection and proper 3-lane roads aren't what you need. You need colours, you need noise and you need spicy Chole bature enjoyed from roadside given by an old man vendor who fights with you later for that 5Re that you don't wanna give!! :)
