The journey to one's home is always one of mixed feelings. One cannot indulge in complete joy because there will be things that will put you down and they may as well be quite near to you. eg.relatives, finances, life.
There also is no reason to be completely sad, either. Because I mean its home right? That word defines everything, negates the bad too.
That's how trips to Kerala are for me. Always has been. No matter what lemons get thrown, Kerala always manages to make delicious soda naringa vellam out of them :)
I associate Kerala with togetherness. The joy of being with cousins. Gossips shared and heard together with karak chai and parippu vada.
Different kind of grasses which grows out of tiles. Crowds everywhere. Crowds of ladies in cotton saris and fake gold jewellery.
Kids gathered near bus stops where old film posters are still peeling and new ones scream glamour.
Young girls with oily hair in twos smiling or talking seriously
about how they can save their friend from that boy. Men necessarily dont stand togetehr but their looks mostly mean one thing. Buses racing together on both lanes.

Cars parked in the no parking zone. Cycles leaning to the wall together with twenty years of shared friendship.
Sacks of cement heaped, clusters of coconut shells somewhere.

When I used to study in Kerala for my graduation I never observed life around me. Life was a routine then...even now. I studied in a college situated in a tea estate (yeah!) and yet I used to crib thats its so far away from the city!
My eyes may have looked but thank God for my brain to have stored images of daily life as memories. So that I can now look at Kerala with a whole fresh approach.
I credit this to wonderful acceptance of beautiful things in life or Instagram... either ways its always healthy to know what is around you, your roots and your culture. Thats what you got and thats what you dont have to go looking for.

ReplyDeleteSo true!! as youngster sometimes we have so much ignored things we long for now.. Things I could have done in my carefree days - Travel, read, network, friends and more didn't happen so much as youngster, and now I await to do all of it. Surely as they say, Wisdom comes with age.. Better late than never
ReplyDeleteI agree Nancy. The sooner positive realisations come the more joyful life is :)
