Martha's Lady - Sarah Orne Jewett - 246 / 365 of reading one short story every day.

Martha's Lady is a wonderful story about the bond that develops between two young women, one a visiting cousin, the other an awkward maid who has just been employed.

This was one of the many stories from the collection Old friends and New published in 1879. A lot of stories in this collection are about female friendships and neighborly support.
